A place for travelers not TOURISTS
The journey is the destination.
For decades, surfers, fishermen, adventurers and those seeking solitude amid the ocean and sun traveled across battered roads under blazing skies to a patch of paradise called San Juanico. The tiny fishing village sits atop a bluff overlooking one of the world’s great point breaks with waves that fan across the south facing bay like spokes of a wagon wheel. As the story goes, some of the first surfers to lay eyes on the spot were so taken by its pure perfection they immediately tried to cover their tracks and give the place a name that would keep other surfers away: Scorpion Bay.
It didn’t work.
San Juanico soon became known far and wide as Scorpion Bay, a destination for anyone who ever laid eyes on photos of a south swell sending waves pinwheeling from one point to another. But San Juanico’s out-of-the-way location and few tourist amenities helped it remain a place that rewarded those who want to experience Mexico as Mexico, far removed from trinket shops and tourists. Today, the roads are (slightly) better than they once were, but getting to San Juanico still requires a spirit of adventure. It’s a place that is as much about the journey as it is the destination.
The real Baja is still out there.
